Okay, so I’m super into boutique cigars. And I admit that most of the mainstream stogies I smoke tend to come from the fancier guys like Davidoff, Fuente, and Padron. But there are a couple super solid mainstream companies that I think could use a little love as well. Oliva Cigar Company is one of them.
Oliva’s Serie V Melanio has been a fan favorite since its original release in 2014. I remember, because about 10 cigars into my personal cigar journey, I’d finally found my first favorite when I smoked that magical blend. It was one of few cigars in recent years whose Cigar Aficionado Cigar of the Year win was not met with massive controversy. Fast-forward 5+ years and even those who may not indulge in the rest of the portfolio will still very gladly smoke a Melanio in any vitola.
But let’s not forget what Oliva has offered us for so many years prior to the release of what is still their most popular blend. Oliva is an ideal beginner smoke, a perfect golf course or outdoor event companion, and a masterful example of consistency and quality craftsmanship. A mainstream brand to be sure, Oliva does well not to fall into the pitfalls of some of its main competitors by staying true to their brand, steering clear of negative attention, and not oversaturating the market with incessant and/or unexciting new releases.
While most of their blends are straightforward if we talk about Oliva Cigars, none of them are bland. There are all manners of available vitolas for varying occasions and preferences. And whether you’re into mild, medium or full smokes there is something in the Oliva portfolio that is sure to suit your taste. More than anything, I appreciate that whenever I pick up an Oliva, I know exactly what to expect – something you can’t say about many brands these days.
What’s your favorite pre-melanio Oliva?
Mine is the V Lancero.
